A nation or a state that takes pride in the number of medals won in prestigious sports events ought to reward sportspersons in a befitting manner. I am told that states like Haryana and Gujarat are showing keenness to promote sports by announcing big cash awards to medalists.

Official records show that Punjab gave Rs 26 lakh, Rs 16 lakh and Rs 11 lakh respectively for the gold, silver and bronze medal winners of 17th Asian Games held at Incheon in South Korea. On the other hand, neighbouring states of Haryana and Gujarat had announced Rs 2 crore and Rs 1 crore each for its players who won gold medals in the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

In today’s times, talent goes where the money is. Even states like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are giving cash awards of Rs 50 lakh for Asiad gold medallists. I believe Punjab is well ahead of these states and prize money should be raised in here too.

Punjab government is planning to announce a new policy to provide jobs to players on the basis of their national and international performances besides fixing incentives for the coaches. Unless state authorities ensure adequate training facilities and good compensation to its sportspersons, the young talent could migrate to other states.

Officials should also ensure that players get access to world class coaching, diet and training equipment. A state proud of its rich heritage and gallant past can and should do much more for its sportspersons than it is being done now.
