A country cannot progress if its people are denied the basic right to education. To spread the light of knowledge, Arvind Khanna has spearheaded Umeed's literacy mission. He drove Umeed's partnership with the Australian High commission, which has imparted elementary education to hundreds of women. Today it is a self sustaining programme where through private sponsorship by 'Umeed' at least 500 women have become literate.
To end discrimination between genders 'Umeed' constantly runs awareness programmes in Punjab on teaching women about their lawful rights. From time to time, volunteers of Umeed have also done pioneering work in bringing about awareness against female foeticide and drug addiction among the youth.
